Dhavana Heritage Pride

Promotion of Culture Heritage and Social Cohesion

In partnership with the Department of Sports Arts and Culture, His Majesty King Davhana was remembered at Mt Luvhola, Elim on Saturday, 2 March 2024. Young and old congregated to commemorate the resilient Vha Venda King Davhana, who is an icon of their heritage, arts and culture. The opening of the ceremony was marked by a Tshikona Gaurd of Honour accompanied by a captivating performance as the invited guests arrived. The Tshigombela, Malende and Tshikona joyfully rendered songs that celebrated their deepest values and clan identities. Their rhythmic dances, passed down through generations, added to the vibrant atmosphere. In a delightful display, an assortment of homegrown fruits from the fertile Venda land (also known as the Garden of Eden) adorned the event.

Various dignitaries, ministers and distinguished guests also attended the event. Amongst them CLLR Dorcus Mbooi (Mayor of Makhado), HRH Princess Sheila Sigcawu, Jane Mufumadi (CEO of Freedom Park), Mr Thovakele MC (Department of Sports, Arts and Culture), the South African Royal Princesses Network, Chief Gabriel Rasebotsha (Modjajdi The Vll Royal Council), Prince Mathokoza Mngomezulu, Prince Thomas Mabena (ROLESA), and members of the Nesengani Traditional Council. The locals could not contain their joy in receiving the esteemed guests they broke out in ulation, music and dancing. The welcome at Mount Luvhola beautifully encapsulated the warmth and hospitality of The Vha Venda Royals.

As the proceedings unfolded, we witnessed Makadzi adorned in vibrant traditional attire. This visual affirmation showcased the Vha Venda people’s harmonious connection to their roots—a testament to their success. Understanding where one comes from is essential for aspiring to even greater heights. His Highness Nesengani MA delivered an empowering address, shedding light on the day’s purpose and sharing the history of the Vha Venda Kings. He emphasized the significance of sacred sites in Venda, places that hold value not only for historians but also for the entire Venda community. Princess Sheila Sigcawu echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of preserving cultural heritage as a foundation for Ubuntu values such as unity, freedom, dignity, and friendship.

Chief Mazwiwa Nga Vho Thovele Nesengani FD Ndiveni II graciously expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all the guests who graced the commemoration day. His address resonated with appreciation for the distinguished guests whose presence left a lasting impact on his community. The Vha Venda nation boasts an extraordinary history. We feel deeply honored to have participated in these festivities that celebrate Venda culture and pay tribute to the lineage of the Vha Venda Kings. The unwavering commitment of the Nesengani Royal Family to uphold their cultural norms serves as an inspiring model for us all. May the Davhana Heritage Pride continue to flourish and thrive.
